 Almost half a century before, a sound was developed in Europe which was a playful swinging folk music which came to be referred to as the "Original Oberkrainer Sound". Nowadays, the group Global.Kryner presents world hits and jazz standards in a modernized Oberkrainer style. The sextet from Austria interprets "Over the Rainbow" or "Like a Virgin", pieces by Cole Porter as well as from Tina Turner or the Beatles in clever, tempo-filled arrangements with accordion, clarinet, trumpet, guitar and trombone. Vocalist Sabine Stieger presents the songs in a beautiful soul voice, moving carefree sensuality across the stage. These musicians play with animated vivacity and their concerts are met with enthusiastic applause, especially among the young.
"Commercially, these six have just hit upon an "eierlegende Wollmilchsau" (a German expression that translates literally as a pig that lays eggs, grows wool and gives milk). Meanwhile the show is just as popular at jazz festivals as it is on the folk music circuit. Who wouldn't like to have such a great idea?!"These words were written by the "Süddeutsche Zeitung" in August 2004 even though at the time Global.Kryner had only presented themselves to a midnight audience of a mere 100 curious listeners in Munich's Lustspielhaus (theater).
It was not without good reason that the "Stuttgarter Zeitung" once wrote: Global.Kryner have long since advanced from the level of parody. They invent music from existing treasures, build bridges between jazz club, beer tent and pop stage - for the pure love of sound - and their kingdom of joy has no boundaries. Global Kryner play us dizzy and have great fun in doing so. It's been a long time since we've heard such exuberant music; the audience can't get enough - the Alpine discovery of the year."
