THREE QUESTIONS FOR THE DIRECTOR: FILIP REMUNDA – CZECH PEACE |

Is it possible to film a movie that deals with political themes, and yet to not be manipulated, or used in favor of some politics?
- That is exactly what we tried to do with this movie. It is difficult because it is very difficult to not be manipulated. We did not want to film a neutral movie because I think that there is no such thing as an “objective” political movie. I attended the filming of this movie with sort of personal feelings and I wanted to be subjective, to depict how I see things. During the filming of this movie, we met and recorded people who are completely ideologically oriented, but also those who are totally unaware of politics and the media manipulation around them.
Your movie talks about how geopolitical issues affect the lives of ordinary “small people.” After your experience of filming this movie, do you believe in the power of the “small man”?
- I was truly saddened by having to believe that there is no point in fighting, that the “small man” cannot do something important for himself and for others. Our movie talks about this even if it is not frequently shown, or if it appears that it has no effect, I think that it is the only important thing. Today in the Czech Republic, people believe move in what is written or said in the media, than what they can see or understand alone. The effects of media manipulation are enormous and that is what we wanted to show in this movie. I think that it is my job to talk about it, to tell people, “Hey, you are being manipulated!” I think that there must be a warning on every TV screen, like on cigarette boxes, “CAUTION! THIS IS MEDIA MANIPULATION!
- This festival is a major oppostion to mainstream, commercialism, and Hollywood. This is a sort of bunker which can savor all these people who, with their works, are trying to express freedom – both artistic and personal. Kustendorf is a special and important kind of free life setting.
