About Band
Sonido Gallo Negro is a musical project that takes up the psychedelic sound of 70’s Peruvian Cumbia, merging it with strong garage attitude. Farfisa organs, fuzz guitars, and the inseparable guiro are the main elements of this lysergic cumbia group. Subgenres as Chicha, Amazonic Cumbia and Boogaloo are present, when the band, formed by members of the Twin Tones, Telekrimen and designer Dr. Alderete, takes the stage. Without a doubt, Sonido Gallo Negro is a proposal of exotic rarity, which puts into their music a touch of esoteric air that alters perception and forces us to dance to exhaustion.
“Cumbia Salvaje”, or Wild Cumbia is the title of the group’s debut album, released under the label of Grabaxiones Alicia in early 2011. It has been well received and praised by critics as one of the most outstanding and original material in the new indie scene of Mexico.
Sonido Gallo Negro innovates musically as well as visually. Not happy with the idea of launching an exotic material with a few precedents, they also feature an irreverent and contrasting art. The album’s artwork has five interchangeable covers, made by artists of high international reputation as Alejandro Magallanes, Fabio Zimbres, Duy Thang Nguyen, Mitch O’Cononnell and Dr. Alderete.
Live hypnotic visuals are developed by Dr. Alderete using the Tagtool, a free software and hardware system. The Tagtool is an instrument that allow to make live visual performance in real time. Like a musical instrument, it works intuitively achieving tight integration between image and music. The Museum of Modern Art, the National Center for the Arts, the Museum of Art Carrillo Gil and the Museum of Anthropology and History, are just some of the spaces that Sonido Gallo Negro has been invited to play in the past year, surpassing attendance expectations in almost all of them.
