DREAMS REALLY DO COME TRUE
The closing ceremony of the Kustendorf International Film and Music Festival 2012 began with the premiere screening of Emir Kusturica's short movie, Our Life, which is part of a larger project, Words with Gods, in the production of Guillermo Arriaga. The script was written by Dunja Kusturica, the director of photography is Martin Sec, the film editor is Svetolik Mica Zajc, the music was composed by Stribor Kusturica, and the producers are Paula Alvarez Vaccaro and Maja Kusturica. After the screening, Emir Kusturica spoke about the movie, saying that after over 30 years of working in film, he returned to the beginning with his short, 15-minute film.
The closing ceremony continued with the folklore ensemble “Svetozar Markovic” from the Kragujevac Cultural Center, whose performance – a compilation of songs and dances from Serbia – thrilled the crowd, which responded with a thunderous applause.
The official part of the program began with the awarding of the specially designed diplomas, which were given to all the student contenders in the COMPETITION PROGRAMME as a souvenir of their stay at Kustendorf. The presenter, Kruna Savic then invited the founder of the festival, Emir Kusturica, to present all the students with the diplomas. As the students took their places on stage, taking photos and greeting Kusturica, the atmosphere in the audience heated up.
Dubravka Lakic, the president of the jury of film critics and journalists, then took the stage, explaining that because of its excellent direction and strong dramaturgy - thanks to which the viewer was caught in the movie's plot - the winner of the Critic's Choice Award is the Polish director Bartolomiej Zmuda for his movie Barbakan.
After the film critics' award was given, the Vilko Filač Аward for best cinematography was given to the Serbian movie, Made of Ashes – work of the cameraman Tatjana Krstevski. The jury – Martin Sec and Svetolik Mica Zajc – presented the award and explained that professionals filmed many of the films in the competition programme and that this award was meant for students and beginners.
- In this movie, the camera is a vital part of the story and strengthens the visual and dramatic aspects of the movie - the jury explained.
Greeted by a roaring applause, the cheerful president of the jury, the Iranian actress Leila Hatami, took the stage with a smile on her face and presented the winners of the festival.
The third place award of Kustendorf 2012, the Bronze Egg, went to the movie Glasgow by the Polish director Piotr Subbotko, with the explanation that the movie went into the story of a mother and a child with humorous and surprising moments, which were always unpredictable.
The second place award, the Silver Egg, was given to the Serbian movie, Boys Where Are You?, by Jelena Gavrilović. The jury pointed out that this is a simple, minimalistic story about a young boy and girl with strong emotional statements about the everyday lives of the new generation.
The winner of the festival in a competition of twenty films is the Spanish movie, Alto Sauce, by the director Fernando Pomares. The president of the jury, Leila Hatami, presented Golden Egg to Pomares,
- The rewarded film transforms news items into an emotional and poetic piece whose style elevates this subject to a higher level. - she explained.
The winner of the Kustendorf 2012, Fernando Pomares, clearly overjoyed, thanked the jury and those present for the award,
- This award means a lot to me and makes me very happy. To me, this is proof that dreams come true. I am grateful to Emir Kusturica and the jury. Thank you to all of you for giving me the chance to meet so many wonderful people during this festival - he said.
The Kustendorf awards – the Gold, Silver, and Bronze Eggs – are the work of Radenka Jungic from Gallery R in Banja Luka.
Before the main closing ceremony of Kustendorf, an award for the best publishing achievement was given in Kapor Bar. The winner of the award was the photographer, Dragan Teodorović Zeko for the book Emir Kusturica and the No Smoking Orchestra – 10 years, published by Radio Television Srpska.
